If you’re setting off for a destination unknown, be sure to do your research ahead of time. Where will you camp? Are there facilities nearby? What types of animals and insects live in that environment? What will the weather be? Although we love a good “no agenda adventure”, don’t go into the trip blindly. 3.      Don’t arrive late
Although it can happen, it’s best to avoid arriving late to a campsite. Not only can this be disturbing to the wildlife and fellow campers, but it can also potentially be unsafe. By not knowing your surroundings, it will make setting up camp in the dark that much more difficult. For more information click here.   Black And White Plaid Wool Blanket & Red Plaid Wool Blanket

In a world where technology is literally in every direction, it’s a sweet relief to unplug and soak up nature. Children today have technology at their fingertips. For more information click here. Yellow Wool Blanket

1.      Educational
The world is our teacher. Learning about plants, herbalism, gardening, animals, and taking care of the earth are just some of the ways we can teach children to be future protectors of land. For more information click here. Gray Wool Blankets

2.      Exercise
So many kids spend their summers and weekends in front of the TV or playing games on their cell phone. Technology can be great…but should be limited. Healthy eating and movement go together. Kids have a lot on their plate these days. Between homework, school, clubs, sports, and college applications, sometimes a little simplicity is what the body and soul needs. Embarking on a family hike on the weekend is a perfect way to disconnect from all other distractions. Pack a picnic and your favorite warm wool blankets and hit the trails! We love packing the gray wool blankets because it’s compact and easy to roll and unroll. Every backpacker should have a good camp blanket and emergency blanket.

Horsing Around: Tips For An Amazing Trail Ride

Setting off into the woods on horseback is an experience like no other. We’re fortunate to have horse trails surrounding our property, which makes for some fun adventures every week. The connection between horse and rider is a wonderful relationship. Whether you’re a novice rider or an experience equestrian, an adventure on horseback is one that you will never forget.
teal-and-cream-plaid-wool-blanket
Below are our tips for planning your next riding adventure.

Wake Up Early
Hit the trails before everyone else. There’s something peaceful about waking up before the rest of the world. Wandering through woods and fields alone puts the world, and your place in it, into perspective. Make a cup of coffee, saddle up, and breathe in the fresh air.

Pack for Safety
As wonderful as your relationship with a horse may be, never forget that they are still animals and can turn on an instant. Packing enough water, a whistle, mini first aid kit, cell phone, and food are important points to consider. Keep your cell phone on you and not in a saddle bag. If your horse takes off and you must dismount, you’re out of luck if the cell phone is attached to the saddle. Attach an identity tag to your horse. Be sure to also wear reflective clothing.

Ensure Your Horses Level
Don’t hit the trails until you’re certain of your horse’s levels both with traffic and fitness.

Mix it up
Experience different trails. Pack a lunch. Have a picnic. Bring your favorite plaid wool blanket, find a great open area and read among the trees. Adventure and beauty is out there if you just look for it. Want a little more adventure? Some camping facilities offer corrals and other amenities to accommodate horses. What an amazing adventure to experience a camping trip with the companionship of a horse!

Planning a camping trip soon?
Check out our woolblankets on sale. Thick wool blankets are a must-have for any expedition. Wrapping up in a camp blanket under the stars with your horse nearby is an unbelievable experience. If you’re planning a group trip, we also offer wholesale wool blankets.

Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company, Washing Wool Blanket

An amazing feeling to wake up early and hit the trails. Starting the day with fresh air and connecting to nature is great for the mind, body, and soul. We’ve put together our top hiking hacks to make sure your journey through the woods is stress-free and enjoyable.
farmhouse-collection-wool-blankets

Line Your Backpack
A simple trash bag will do. This is especially helpful if you’re carrying extra water or items that may leak. If it begins to rain your items will be safeguarded. Plus, it serves as a trash bag if you don’t hit stormy weather. Win-win.
Invest in Good Socks
We prefer using wool socks. Wool is temperature-regulating, so wool socks are ideal for hot or cold temperatures.
Pack Band-Aids
There is nothing worse than developing a pesky blister. It throws the entire hike off. Pack band-aids, even if you don’t think you will need them. You can also use Duct Tape—which can serve multiple purposes.
Protect Your Phone
An easy and cheap way to do this is to simply store your cell phone in a plastic bag. This prevents damage in the event the bag gets wet or if you must trek through the water.
Use A Prescription Bottle
Old plastic prescription serves as a great holder for aspirin, Band-Aids, and antiseptic towels. It also keeps the items dry.
Use Binder Clips
Binder clips are excellent and cheap tools to hang dry items off your backpack (i.e., wet socks, shirts, or bandanas).
Plan
Weather can change in an instant. Always be sure that you are packing for worst-case scenarios. There are many camping gear items out there that pack up compactly, including rain jackets and winter puff jackets. Pack a warm merino wool blanket on the outside of your pack. It won’t take up much space and can come in handy if the weather turns cold. I always pack my navy-blue wool blanket, my olive green wool blanket, or my gray wool blanket. The dark color hides dirt, it’s easy to clean and shake out, and the dense weave keeps me warm at the summit.

One key item to a successful, fun, camping trip enjoyed by all is planning ahead.  As camping has become more popular over the years, it has become more difficult to roll on into a campground and have your pick of the litter for top campsites.  You must plan ahead and reserve the right site. You should always plan your meals and snacks for the trip as well as have ideas for activities that will keep you and kids busy and stimulated.  Here are a few ideas to help you and family get in touch with nature this year.

Hiking
Hiking is a great source of exercise but is also a social activity.  Use this time to connect with nature and have meaningful conversations with your family.  A challenging hike with amazing viewpoints can make lasting memories.

Campfire
Building a campfire can be a great experience.  It’s a great time to teach the kids how to build a fire as well as learn about fire safety.  Funny stories and ghost stories will make for a night to remember. Don’t forget the s’mores!

Board games
Bring your competitive spirit and show your family who is the king or queen of board games.  Fun family games like Pictionary will bring a lot of laughs.

Stargazing
Put the campfire out and turn off all the lights. Lay down a few 100% merino wool blankets, our warm and comfortable gray and yellow wool blanket, tilt your heads to the sky and get lost in the stars.

There are many other activities to try like orienteering, water activities like boating, canoeing, or kayaking.  The most important takeaway is to create those family memories that will last a lifetime. Hiking: The Complete Mind-Body Workout By: Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company

Strap on those comfy hiking boots, take a deep breath of fresh air, and begin your journey into the woods!  Not only will you get a great physical workout, but you’ll also experience the pure beauty of mother nature as well as all the other mental health benefits associated with being active outdoors.

Hiking, just like any other physical activity, can help increase your overall fitness levels such as cardio, muscle strength, and weight control.  You’ll gain strength in muscles that help to increase your balance, stability, and agility.  Just make sure to ease into the longer more challenging hikes as you’ll be more prone to injury as a newbie hiker.  Along with becoming physically fit, your mental fitness and awareness increase as well.  You’ll enjoy benefits of increasing your sleep quality and relieving tension and anxiety. Studies have shown that experiences in nature help to increase positives moods and decrease negative moods.   Disconnecting from the technology that consumes our daily lives and beginning to connect with nature can provide individuals with a sense of inner peace and general well-being.

Hiking is also a great social activity.  Planning regular hiking meetups or long-distance treks is a great way to bond with old friends and new friends alike. Once you’ve reached the end of the trail or the peak of your hike, it’s always nice to sit down and relax for a bit, rehydrate, and eat a healthy snack.

So, grab your backpack and bring along your favorite Gray Wool BlanketsYellow Wool Blanket  &  Black And White Wool Blanket from our 100% merino wool blankets Explorer Collection and set foot into the wild. Your mind and body will be happy you did!

 Rugged Tan Wool Blanket

Baked French Toast

Ingredients

24-inch French baguette
6 large free range eggs
3 cups organic whole milk
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup packed organic brown sugar
1 cup organic pecans
1/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon unsalted butter
1/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt
Sliced bananas (or substitute with 2 cups of organic blueberries)

Preparation

Butter a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Cut twenty 1-inch slices from baguette and arrange in one layer in baking dish. In a large bowl whisk together eggs, milk, nutmeg, vanilla, and 3/4 cup brown sugar and pour evenly over bread. Chill mixture, covered, until all liquid is absorbed by bread, at least 8 hours, and up to 1 day.

Preheat oven to 350°F.

In a shallow baking pan spread pecans evenly and toast in middle of oven until fragrant, about 8 minutes. Toss pecans in pan with 1 teaspoon butter and salt.

Increase temperature to 400°F.

Sprinkle pecans and blueberries evenly over bread mixture. Cut 1/2 stick butter into pieces and in a small saucepan heat with remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar, stirring, until butter is melted. Drizzle butter mixture over bread and bake mixture 20 minutes, or until any liquid from blueberries is bubbling.

Serve French toast with pure maple syrup.

Summertime Outdoor Fun

Summertime is meant to be spent outdoors. Fresh air and nature are so good for the soul. The constant drain of technology we are faced with throughout the week can be downright exhausting. It’s important to put the phone away, log off email, and embrace your surroundings—every day and not just when the weekend calls. Whether you live in the city or in the country, make sure to carve out time and get down with mother nature.
Summer outdoor fun can take many different forms. Our favorite hot summer nights include wrapping up in a warm wool blanket and sipping wine (or whiskey!) while lounging on the porch swing, watching the sunset rays and fireflies sparkle throughout the yard. Keep the phones inside and lose track of time for a while. Sometimes simplicity and nature are just what the mind and body need.
Some other ways to incorporate summertime fun includes…
Setting up a horseshoe game
Draping a sheet from two trees and screening a favorite movie outside on the lawn. Don’t forget some quality woolblankets to lay out!
Playing corn hole
Building a bonfire
Building a tree fort specifically, with the Stargazer gray wool blankets and yellow wool blanket!
Rounding up some friends and play the guitar on the front porch
Grilling corn, smoking meat, and roasting marshmallows
Going for a sunset horseback ride

And on that note...how many more days until summer is here?

How to Create a Welcoming Guest Room

There is something special about opening your home to family and friends. Creating a warm and inviting space is a sweet way to ensure your guests are comfortable. Below are a few simple and classic ideas to spruce up your guest room and make your visitor feel cherished.

Flowers and Plants
Fresh flowers bring a clean and organic vibe to any space. Leave a bouquet of their favorite stems on the dresser. A pretty arrangement and pleasant smell is sure to add a nice touch.

Toiletries
There’s nothing worse than realizing you forgot to pack your toothpaste and toothbrush when you arrive to your destination. Keep some spare toiletries on hand including a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, and makeup wipes. We make our own slow cold-pressed soap and always keep a few extra bars in the guest bathroom for our friends to use and take back home with them.

Tray
A tray is a wonderful touch. Include a nice hand lotion, essential oil, candle, and sparkling water.

Blanket
It’s always a safe bet to keep a spare blanket, just in case your guests get cold. As a wool blanket company, we always have plenty of yellow wool blanket to go around! We always keep a cream wool blanket in the guest room closet.

Clean Towels
Provide clean bath towels, hand towels, and wash clothes in the bathroom and leave a few spare ones in their guest room.

Comfortable Bed
Nothing says “ahhh” after a long drive or flight then a comfortable bed that your guests can sink into and dream the night away. Fresh linens and fluffy pillows make all the difference.

Shades
This one may seem obvious, but adequate window shades truly make all the difference in a good night’s sleep. Whether you use black-out shades or plantation shutters, keeping the room dark allows your guests to wake up slow and on their terms.

There you have it! Simple and easy ways to make your guests feel special.
